KGB: special services of neighbouring countries interested in destabilising situation in Pridnestrovie in pre-election period

This is what KGB chairman Mikhail Lapitsky told President Yevgeny Shevchuk today

Tiraspol, 29 August. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. President Yevgeny Shevchuk has received the chairman of Pridnestrovie's Committee for State Security (KGB). In the course of a working meeting Yevgeny Shevchuk and Mikhail Lapitsky discussed issues relating to the current activities of the Committee for State Security. Special attention was given to the specific areas of the committee's functioning and the implementation of tasks aimed at safeguarding state interests.

This particularly referred to a military parade which took place in Kishinev on 27 August with the involvement of servicemen from Ukraine, Romania, Great Britain, Northern Ireland and a number of other countries. Pridnestrovie is also concerned over Ukraine's military buildup near the Pridnestrovian border.

The KGB chairman also informed the president about the interest the special services of neighbouring countries take in destabilising the situation in Pridnestrovie in the pre-election period. Related to this is enhanced activities by some special forces aimed at instigating infighting among various public organisations in Pridnestrovie in the run-up to presidential elections by disseminating misinformation in a number of media outlets, by using other information resources and by organising information leaks. According to Mikhail Lapitsky, KGB has to undertake additional measures to neutralise the efforts of the special services of neighbouring countries aimed at destroying Pridnestrovie's statehood.

According to KGB, a number of political strategists have already arrived in Pridnestrovie with alleged aims of providing technological assistance in the pre-election period.

According to the president's press service, Yevgeny Shevchuk and Mikhail Lapitsky also discussed a decision made by Russia's ministry of defence to inspect the readiness of some ministries and the Bank of Russia to work under war conditions.

The country's macroeconomic situation was also discussed at the meeting. Attention was given to the current budget execution. As was earlier noted, the adoption of the budget with «air» revenues had already led to a shortage of funds assigned to uniformed agencies. According to the president, this fact is affecting the level of state security and its components. Among the subjects discussed during a Security Council meeting on 8 August 2016, there was an issue related to the financing of uniformed ministries and agencies and the satisfaction of accounts payable. Tomorrow Yevgeny Shevchuk is set to discuss this issue in more detail with the government's leadership during a closed-door meeting.

Following the meeting the president gave instructions [to KGB forces] to strengthen security measures both at the border and inside the country in the pre-holiday period and on Day of Republic. In connection with the increased number of provocative acts in [Ukraine's] Odessa region and in the Republic of Moldova, it is planned to pay special attention to certain aspects of the movement of foreign citizens through the Moldo-Pridnestrovian and Ukrainian-Pridnestrovian borders.

The president charged KGB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs with maintaining a high level of public security and crime detection. The head of state also instructed them to brisk up their work to curb the interference of the special forces of neighbouring states into Pidnestrovie's home affairs.
