President: there are risks of armed provocations by extremist groups from Moldova and Ukraine

This is what Yevgeny Shevchuk said at a board meeting of the Committee for State Security (KGB) where the results of the committee's work in 2015 were summed up

Tiraspol, 17 February. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Speaking at a KGB board meeting, the president noted that today the country is still experiencing foreign and domestic threats. Among external risks Yevgeny Shevchuk singled out the ongoing information, economic, diplomatic pressure and impact on the PMR.

«In the meantime, there are risks of armed provocations by extremist groups from Moldova and Ukraine," said the president.

«Moldova participates in an efficient peacekeeping operation. But anyway, such statements are publicly made by Moldovan officials and in media outlets. The same can be seen in Ukraine. There is intensified cooperation between Moldovan and Nato forces with joint military exercises and additional financial assistance," said the president.

He also pointed out the ongoing restrictions on the freedom of movement of Pridnestrovian citizens.

«In 2014 and 2015 we saw an increased number of recruiting activities undertaken at border crossings in Moldova and Ukraine, as well as attempts to learn confidential information from Pridnestrovian officials or law enforcers crossing this or that border. Officials often become subject to politically motivated procedures, such as a body search and luggage examination. These procedures may sometimes be humiliating and coupled with threats. The aim is to obtain information, reduce the potential of effective state administration and the possibility of resisting risks and threats the country is facing," said the president, adding that this group of officials is under special control when crossing the Pridnestrovian-Ukrainian or Pridnestrovian-Moldovan borders, as well as passing Moldovan border crossings, particularly Kishinev International Airport.

«According to information received, — and I have said it in public and to OSCE representatives — these actions are taken under direct control of Romanian secret service advisers to Moldova’s security agency. I have publicly asked the special representative of the OSCE chairperson to confirm or refute our concerns, taking into consideration a possible target programme to influence one side of the conflict. We believe such influence does not form confidence platforms for finding solutions to the problems existing in relations between Tiraspol and Kishinev," the president's press office cites him as saying.
