A quarter of a century fight: Pridnestrovie marks its 25th anniversary

Ukraine and Moldova block the republic every now and then, hampering exports and goods transit and striking a serious blow on the economy. Over the past year, during the Ukrainian crisis, the blockade has become even tougher. And all these aim at forcing Pridnestrovie to re-orientate its exports to the EU market and make trade operations under the Moldovan jurisdiction. And what is more — to turn its back on Russia.

2 September 2015 the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic marks its 25th anniversary, 25th years of independence. For a quarter of a century the PMR has been sovereign, democratic, constitutional state.

Prospects for recognition

A quarter of a century has showed Pridnestrovie can develop as a state. Today the PMR has metallurgical, textile, electrotechnical industries, agriculture and the world-known wine and brandy KVINT factory.

However, the republic is till internationally non-recognised. The Moldowan authorities are likely to fear Europe's reaction than Pridnestrovie's independence as it is.

«Moldova seems to be afraid of to take any decision on Pridnestrovie. They are afraid not to please their overseas supervisors. The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic has always been guided by the principles of good neighbourly relations with both Moldova and Ukraine. The Pridnestrovians do not want to fight and quarrel, we want to establish trade and economic relations, cultural and political contacts," said the head of Pridnestrovie's representation office to South Ossetia, Egor Kochiev.

Blockade

Pridnestrovie may not want to fight, but Ukraine and Moldova from now and then block the republic, hampering its exports and goods transit and striking a serious blow on the economy. Over the past year, during the Ukrainian crisis, the blockade has become even tougher. And all these aim at making Pridnestrovie re-orientate its exports to the EU market and make trade operations under the Moldovan jurisdiction. And what is more — to turn its back to Russia. In response to Tiraspol's reluctance to compromise, Kishinev has actually paralysed Pridnestrovie's foreign economic activity.

«The economic blockade has led to Pridnestrovie's production being supplied to Moldova and the EU because double taxation costs have made it noncompetitive on Russia's market, whereas the European Union has been granted to Moldovan and Pridnestrovian manufacturers a preferential access to its market as part of the so-called Autonomous Trading Preferences (ATP). This is part of Moldova's plan: to make Pridenstrovie's economic elite dependable and use them to exert pressure on the republican leadership, driving out the Russian influence from the region," believes Nina Shtanski, deputy prime minister on international cooperation, minister of foreign affairs.

PMR — Russia

However, Pridnestrovie has never wanted to turn away from Russia, whatever may happen in the foreign policy sphere. Moreover, a referendum was held in the non-recognised republic in 2006. Over 90% of citizens voted for the accession to the Russian Federation.

«It is Russia that stopped bloodshed on the Dniester banks. It is the Russian peacekeepers that preserve peace in Pridnestrovie. On its way to independence, Pridnestrovie will never betray its relations with Russia, on the contrary, making them far stronger for the sake of security and development. Practice has shown Russia is the most reliable partner and faithful friend to the Pridnestrovian people," says Egor Kochiev.

Eurasian integration

For decades Russia has provided active assistance to Pridnestrovie. When it was «hot», Russia sent its peacemakers to stop the armed conflict and began to restore social facilities right after fire was ceased. At present the programme in this sphere is being carried out by ANO Eurasian Integration. It is building 14 objects.

As promised, this year, by 1 September, Eurasian Integration has built a new building of the university's medical department It is the first university building to have been built over the past 25 years. In fact, it is not even a university building but a full-fledged medical centre.

«It is equipped with everything necessary both for training students and for using it for medical purposes. Republican Hospital, chemotherapy building and the medical department building itself make up an integral complex that will help to train highly qualified medical specialists," said Russia's MP, the founder of ANO Eurasian Integration, Aleksey Zhuravlyov.

Besides, a kindergarten and an anti-TB hospital are going to be commissioned as well. Now territory improvement works are drawing to a close there. Objects are commissioned every quarter.

Pridnestrovie's president, Yevgeny Shevchuk, thanked on behalf of the Pridnestrovian people Dmitriy Rogozin and the management of ANO Eurasian Integration for the implementation of this significant project.

«I want to particularly emphasise this was a system solution, including not only the construction of medical institutions, but also the erection of a university medical department for training students on the base of up-to-date technologies and methods. This base will be used for adjustment training of high qualification specialists so that they can provide high technology medical assistance using up-to-date equipment. Despite being in the process of implementation, the effects of the humanitarian project are evident even today. This is due, among other things, to previously supplied equipment. For instance, modern reanimobiles have already saved lives to dozens of our citizens," he said.
