Vyacheslav Nikinov, a State Duma deputy:
«Pridnestrovie cannot defend itself in quite a proper way. But Russia is certain to provide assistance in this or that form. For instance, we can recognise Pridnestrovie and begin to supply there our weaponry. The USA has always stood against the Minsk agreements because they wanted a war to be unleashed between Russia and Ukraine. Now they can get us involved into a war against Moldova as well. Nevertheless, it is not advantageous for any regional power, and I am sure that Russia is using all available channels to prevent this scenario.”
Fedor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of the Russia in Global Politics magazine:
«In the current situation between Russia and Ukraine, it is strange to expect Kiev's assistance to the Russian military. As a result, it may aggravate the situation in Pridnestrovie, and Ukraine will not be concerned about it: this will be our «headache», and they will have another occasion to accuse us of new Russian aggression. Pridnestrovie is separated from Russia, and it is not clear what can be done in this situation, given that we take political and moral responsibility for it. With Moldova's and Romania's tightened position, we cannot help Tiraspol without initiating a new very serious crisis. To avoid a new conflict, Russia may begin backstage talks with Europe, first of all, with Germany to express its distinct position: if a war breaks out there, Russia cannot stand aside. Perhaps, they do not understand it in Europe and believe they can press Russia in this way…”
Alina Arshinova, a State Duma deputy:
«On the one hand, under far-fetched reasons Moldova unofficially began to ban the Russian military from entering Moldova on their way back to Pridnestrovie after seeing their relatives in Russia. On the other hand, Kiev has banned the transit of the Russian military to Pridnestrovie via its territory. Besides, Mikhail Saakashvili was appointed Odessa governor, and Pridnestrovie has taken this appointment as preparation for aggression. There is no point in requesting clarification from Ukraine, but Moldova must explain the reason for their actions. It looks like a well-organised campaign aimed at separating the republic from our soldiers, which can be followed by an attempt of military invasion… We must do our best to escape the escalation of the Pridnestrovian conflict. If hostilities occur, Russia must consider all scenarios, including recognition of Pridnestrovie.”
