The attempts of some political forces to reform the peacekeeping mission in Pridnestrovie are not conducive to the settlement of the conflict, states Russia's MFA press service
"We must admit that some political forces in Europe are still obsessed with the idea of transforming the peacekeeping operation in Pridnestrovie into a peace guaranteeing mission," underscored the ministry's spokesperson. The MFA recalled that this issue had been raised again during the round table discussion of the report "The reform of the peacekeeping mission in Transnistria: a premise for conflict settlement”. The discussion, which took place in Brussels, was attended by representatives of different political forces and movements.
"The mandate of the present peacekeeping mission is far from exhausted. The operation in Pridnestrovie is unique in its own way: not a single peacemaker has been killed for 22 years; not a single serious clash has been detected," underscores the MFA's statement.
The MFA also noted that Russia, Moldova and Pridnestrovie, establishing the joint peacekeeping operation, as well as Ukraine, which later joined them, had determined that the mission format could be changed if there were conditions for political arrangements in the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian settlement. That's what the sides were step away from in 2003, but due to the direct interference of Washington and Brussels, Moldova lost this opportunity - signing of the so-called Kozak Memorandum was frustrated
"It is evident that the principal motive of the political forces standing for the transformation of the existing peacekeeping mission is not to achieve guarantees of peace and stability on the Dniester, but at any price to make Russia withdraw its peacekeeping contingent from the conflict zone. Is it the shortest way to the settlement? We are sure it isn't," said Russia's MFA.
