Supreme Council ratifies updated treaty on cooperation with South Ossetia

The parliament has also ratified an intergovernmental agreement on visa-free regime with Abkhazia

Tiraspol, 24 January. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The Supreme Council has ratified an updated treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia. The first agreement between the states was signed back in 1994. According to the head of the consular office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PMR, Vladimir Luzhansky, in connection with the changes that have occurred for these 20 years, including legal recognition of South Ossetia by Russia and some other countries, there is a need to update this agreement. On 20 September 2016, the chairmen of the governments of Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia, Pavel Prokudin and Domenti Kulumbegov, signed a new cooperation treaty.

«The treaty reaffirms the mutual recognition of the independence and sovereignty of Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia," said Vladimir Luzhansky.

Before the document was submitted to the plenary session of the Supreme Council, the text of the treaty had been studied and approved by the committee for foreign policy and international relations.

«The document complies with all the necessary norms of the regulations, including Article 125 providing for the procedure for the ratification of international treaties," said the deputy head of the committee, Viktor Guzun.

According to Vladimir Luzhansky, the document will be soon submitted for ratification to the parliament of South Ossetia.

Also, today the Supreme Council has ratified an intergovernmental visa-free agreement between Pridnestrovie and the Republic of Abkhazia.

Since 1 April 2016 Abkhazia has introduced visas for entering the republic. An exception is only made for the citizens of the countries that have signed mutual visa-free agreements with Abkhazia.

The National Assembly of Abkhazia ratified this agreement with the PMR on 29 December 2016.

According to the appendix to the intergovernmental agreement, Pridnestrovians can visit Abkhazia on the basis of a Pridnestrovian passport, a diplomatic or service passport, a USSR passport with an insert on the Pridnestrovian citizenship, a certificate of return to the PMR. Children under 16 can use a birth certificate with an insert on the PMR citizenship.
