Shevchuk: presidential form of government stipulated in constitution and must persist

The Pridnestrovian president has demolished rumours about the implementation of a constitutional reform and establishment of a parliamentary republic in Pridnestrovie

Slobodzeya district, 23 November. /Novosti Pridnestrovya"/. Pridnestrovie must remain a presidential republic as a parliamentary form of government is ruinous for the state. This statement was made by the president, Yevgeny Shevchuk, during his meeting with Blizhny Khutor villagers in response to their request to comment on rumours about an upcoming constitutional reform.

«The constitution stipulates a presidential form of government, and it must persist," said the president. Yevgeny Shevchuk underscored that this form of government corresponds to Russia's state system. «The president must be the head of state who has both powers and responsibility," added the president.

According to Yevgeny Shevchuk, those who aim to transform Pridnestrovie into a parliamentary republic will try to earn at the forthcoming parliamentary elections the majority necessary for the approval of constitutional amendments, that is, two thirds of seats.

«I believe a parliamentary republic is a ruinous form of government for Pridnestrovie," said the president. The president underscored that Pridnestrovians must have the opportunity to assess the president's performance through direct voting.

«I am in favour of a presidential form of government when each citizen has the opportunity to make an evaluation of the acting president every five years," concluded Yevgeny Shevchuk.
