Defender of the Fatherland Day ceremonies taking place in Tiraspol

Tiraspol, 20 February. /Novosti Pridnestrovye/. A rally dedicated to Defender of the Fatherland Day took place at the Military Glory Memorial. It was attended by President Shevchuk, Chair of the Government Pavel Prokudin, Deputy Chair of the Supreme Council Alexander Shcherba, representatives of executive and legislative authorities, NGO members, city residents.

«Today we are recollecting those who died, defending the Fatherland during the civil war, WWI and the Great Patriotic War, in regional conflicts, in Afghanistan, Angola and other regions. We are recollecting defenders of the Fatherland who at the cost of their lives prevented the Chernobyl disaster. Let us forever cherish the memory of those who in the fields of battles!” said Yevgeny Shevchuk at the rally.

He recalled that stability and peace are the greatest achievements for any state.

Today, when there is unrest on Pridnestrovie’s borders, soldiers and officers of the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior, KGB, as well as peacekeepers, are continuing to serve their Fatherland, defending peace and stability,” said Yevgeny Shevchuk.

He expressed special gratitude and appreciation to veterans and Fatherland defenders' family members.

«To defend the Fatherland is a sacred duty. We can see our servicemen fulfilling their duty, defending and safeguarding Pridnestrovie. Our country will further endeavour best efforts to preserve peace and stability in the country,” concluded the president.

The chairman of the Tiraspol Veterans' Council, ret. Lieutenant Colonel Valery Glazkov believes that the issue of the country’s defence is of current importance.

«The events that took place in the early 1990s have convinced us that we must constantly take care of our Army’s military preparedness. The country’s leadership takes practical measures to provide the armed forces with everything needed. The citizens of Pridnestrovie are sure that our Army is capable of defending them and ensuring peaceful existence for them,” he underscored.

A minute of silence was observed the tribute of fallen Fatherland defenders. A flower-laying ceremony closed the rally.
