The Bendery athlete represented the North Ossetian-Alanian Dynamo club in this event
The latest European Judo Championship ‘The Gold League’ among the teams was held in the Russian city of Samara on December 20. The World-class athlete from the North Ossetian-Alanian Dynamo club Bendery resident Victor Skvortsov won a silver medal.
As the Sports Ministry reports on its website, the Russian club beat the French team ‘Boulogne-Billancourt’ with the score 4:1 in the first stage of the competitions. And in a semi-final the Ossetian team knocked out the German club ‘Abensberg’ the last year's European champion, with the same total result. Victor Skvortsov won the fight with Christopher Velk with a hold estimated by referee as ‘ippon’, i.e. a flawless victory.
In the final Ossetian Dinamo team faced one more Russian team called ‘Yavara-Neva’ from St. Petersburg. The most persistent duel turned out a fight between Victor Skvortsov and Denis Yartsev of the Russsian Federation in the weight category up to 73 kg. The Pridnestrovian athlete’s rival managed to make the only active hold which provided him a victory in this fight.
After the final Victor Skvortsov shared his tournament impressions with the Russian journalists: “I am happy that our team reached the final. However, we failed to organaize ourselves in the final meeting properly, and so we lost to Yavara. Nevertheless, we’re all right in respect of training. I think, we will win this tournament next year. The silver is also a good result for now.”
The Petersburg club became the winner of the Gold League in the result. The Ossetian team became the owner of the silver medals. The leading European judoists finished their series of 2014 judo events with this competition. Victor Skvortsov won a bronze medal in the World Championship and a silver award in Old World competition between the strongest teams.
