Pridnestrovian rowers win 14 medals at international canoeing competition

Prize-winning places were contested by teams from Pridnestrovie, Moldova, Belarus, Romania and Ukraine

Dubossary, 26 September. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The international tournament Golden Canoe took place in Kishinev on 24 September. It was initiated last year with the assistance of the rowing federation and twice Olympic champions Nikolai Juravschi and Victor Reneischi, the Sports Agency press service reports.

Teams from Pridnestrovie, Moldova, Belarus, Romania and Ukraine took part in the competition. The tournament is held in the three age groups — among boys and girls born in 1998 and younger, among those born in 1996 and older, and among veteran rowers. The rowers competed in the 200m and 500m canoe and kayaking.

For the first time, the tournament featured dragon boat heats and rowing regatta exhibition performance.

The Dubossary team was represented by high-class rowers: twice world champion and three-time European junior champion Sergey Filin, international master, European champion, Youth Olympic prize winner and world champion Vladislav Oleynikov. Candidate masters Kristian Chebotar, Natalya Gulko and Oleg Chebotar, as well as young athletes of the Pridnestrovian school — champions and prize winners of Moldova and Pridnestrovie — Nikita Torpan, Evgeny Zayats, Fedor Baltaga and Denis Kretsu also took part in the tournament.

Sergey Filin and Vladislav Oleynikov became champions in the 200m kayak pairs and won silver in the 500m.

Oleg Kadrichenko won gold in the 200m and 500m kayak pairs and bronze in the 200m kayak singles.

Nikita Torpan won two gold medals in the 200m and 500m kayak pairs. Yevgeny Zayats won bronze in the 500m kayak singles and 200m kayak pairs.

The Pridnestrovian team won a total of 14 medals, including six gold, two silver and six bronze medals.
