Tiraspol, 9 July. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. One of the founders Shevchenko Pridnestrovian State University (PSU), Doctor of Medicine Vladimir Okushko has passed away at the age of 85.
The scientist was born in 1933 in the city of Cetatea Alba (now Belgorod Dnestrovsky). He graduated with honours from the secondary school and then from the Moscow Medical Institute of Stomatology.
From 1959 to 1960 he studied at the clinical residency, after which for more than a decade he was an assistant professor at the department of dental surgery of Chisinau State Medical Institute.
From 1973 to 1995 he was the head of the department of preventive dentistry of Donetsk Medical University. He was the founder of a new scientific school - the clinical physiology of the tooth. He discovered the phenomenon of "functional resistance", which opened a new layer of facts and ways to control the incidence of caries.
In 1996, he became research pro-rector at PSU and at the same time head of the research lab "Stomo".
From 2013 to the present he was the head of the department of anatomy and general pathology of the Medical Faculty of PSU.
More than 30 PhD theses, 3 doctoral dissertations were defended under his guidance. He wrote 7 monographs and over 600 scientific works, patented over 30 innovations.
He was president of the Association of Dentists of Pridnestrovie. He was awarded the medal "For Labour Merits", the Order of St Paisii Velichkovsky and the Order "Labour Glory".
The farewell ceremony will be held tomorrow, 10 July 2018, at 12.00 at the Medical Faculty of PSU.
