Presidential grant to allow archaeologists to explore ancient burial mounds

Employees of the "Archeology" Research Laboratory will carry out rescue operations at the facilities that are threatened with demolition

Tiraspol, June 10. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Archaeologists of the Pridnestrovian State University became one of the winners of the presidential grants competition. They will excavate burial mounds in the Slobodzeya Region. This is further multi-year work, the purpose of which is to preserve the crumbling archaeological monuments and to obtain new scientific knowledge about the most ancient period in the Pridnestrovian history.

At the same time, researchers are analyzing the state of other archaeological sites.

“It is clear that we cannot excavate hundreds and thousands of archaeological sites in one year and save them in this way. But, at least, when we examine certain monuments, we assess the other archaeological objects` survival rate along the way in the Slobodzeya Region, and not only there. Maybe next year, if there is such an opportunity, we will also be able to study other most destroyed monuments,” Vitaly Sinika, the Head of the initiative group, the Head of the “Archeology” Research Laboratory said.

The names of the Pridnestrovian archaeologists appear regularly in the media - with a message about the discovery of an important find. Many of them are unique, preserved as a single-piece, so to speak, and only in the Pridnestrovian land.

“For example, last year we found in a Cimmerian burial - this is the 9th-18th centuries BC. - a two-tiered molded vessel. It is as if 2 vessels are stacked on top of each other, there are no analogues in any of the museums. Its value is that it represents a certain era and shows the contacts of the population of the territory of present-day Pridnestrovie at the beginning of the first millennium BC. - about 3000 years ago,” Vitaly Sinika explains.

And this means that in this way it is possible to designate Pridnestrovie in the system of migration and other processes that were taking place throughout Europe at that time. Each find is like a piece of the puzzle, it helps to fill in the white spots on the map and to better understand what happened in those distant times on our land.

“Everything that we find during such excavations is unique, no one other than us will study the history of Pridnestrovie,” the archaeologist says.

There is one more important point - the image-building one. Excavation, research, analysis of the data obtained - all this is done in close cooperation with specialists from neighboring and more distant countries. And each such contact is a plus not only for Pridnestrovian science, but also for the republic as a whole.

The specialists carried out preparatory work back in May. They will dig burial mounds in Slobodzeya Region, which have suffered as a result of intensive agricultural plowing and may eventually be completely lost. Many of them have already lost the earthen embankment, and the fact that they were found is also the archaeologists` merit. To do this, they needed to carefully study the available old maps and modern aerial photographs.
