Sergey Lavrov: 5 + 2 format has not been successful as yet

According to the Head of Russian diplomacy, the reason for this is the position of the United States

Russia can cooperate with the US on Pridnestrovie within the framework of the 5 + 2 format. However, to date, it has not been successful through the fault of the American side. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told this in an interview with Russian journalists.

“Russia can cooperate with the US on Pridnestrovie, where there is a 5 + 2 mechanism. So far, this format has not been successful because the Americans are trying to bring everything to heel and create another abscess out of Moldova in the post-Soviet space,” the Head of the Diplomatic Office said.

According to Sergey Lavrov, in the modern world the United States cannot resolve any issue on the international agenda alone.

“They are trying to do it, but such behavior is inertial. This is mainly happening in the post-Soviet space, where the US is openly promoting the anti-Russian agenda, trying to shape the processes of states` further formation in a favorable direction for them - in Central Asia, Ukraine and Moldova,” the diplomat said.

The Russian Foreign Minister believes that Russia should oppose this policy.

“First of all, through the fulfillment of our obligations to our strategic allies and partners. This was also clearly stated by the President of the Russian Federation. Besides, there are other forms of cooperation - at the level of the executive and legislative branches, at the level of civil society. I think that it is through civil society that we need to be much more active and go-getting,” Sergey Lavrov said.

The Permanent Meeting on Political Issues in the Framework of the Negotiation Process has been operating since 2002. Moldova and Pridnestrovie act as parties to the conflict, Russia, Ukraine and the OSCE - as mediators. Since 2005, the United States and the EU have joined the Permanent Meeting as observers. The last time its participants gathered was October last year in Bratislava. In July this year, Pridnestrovie announced the need to hold the next round in the 5 + 2 format.
