Shevchuk: language of ultimatums must not be used in diplomacy

According to the Pridnestrovian president, it is too early so far to speak about Pridnestrovie's withdrawal from the 5+2 format, and negotiations may intensify at various levels after electoral cycles finish in both Moldova and the PMR

Tiraspol, 30 August. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. Diplomats should avoid the language of ultimatums. This is what the President Yevgeny Shevchuk said, responding to the proposal by a First Pridnestrovian TV channel journalist to declare that the PMR may withdraw from the 5+2 format and completely end its dialogue with Moldova in the absence of specific results of negotiations.

«The language of ultimatums is inefficient in diplomacy and must not be applied," said Yevgeny Shevchuk, adding that Pridnestrovie is in tune for negotiations and search for compromise in the socio-economic area, but there are serious political differences between the sides and this cluster of issues is traditionally postponed «for the future».

According to the head of state, Pridnestrovie's MFA has employed all diplomatic channels to inform Kishinev and other 5+2 format participants about the negative consequences of certain activities by Moldova for the Pridnestrovian economy. However, in order to resolve a railway communication problem and a number of other issues, it is necessary to have a certain political will, which is what Pridnestrovie's partners lack so far.

Yevgeny Shevchuk expressed hope that negotiations at various levels would intensify after presidential elections in Moldova. «Perhaps, there'll be a certain impulse after that," said the president.

Besides, according to the president, 5+2 format participants are certain to know that Pridnestrovie will also launch an election campaign, which also affects the intensity of negotiation process.

In the course of a press conference the head of state commented on a recent statement by Pridnestrovie's ex-foreign minister, Valery litskay, about Pridnestrovie's integration with Moldova. Yevgeny Shevchuk noted that the former diplomat, as well as any other citizen, had the right to express his opinion, recalling that as foreign minister of the PMR Valery Litskay took part in drafting the Kozak Memorandum the implementation of which would make Pridnestrovie an autonomy in Moldova.

The president underscored at the same time that the country's current foreign policy corresponded to the 2006 referendum at which the absolute majority of citizens voted for the independence of the PMR and subsequent free accession to Russia, and any radical change of the country's foreign policy also should build on people's will, i.e. a referendum.

«Today, however, it is not necessary [to hold a referendum] because all public opinion polls show the same results as that at the last referendum," concluded Yevgeny Shevchuk.
