Pridnestrovie's FM meets UN special rapporteur on minority issues

The parties agreed to continue constructive cooperation

Tiraspol, 23 June. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The MFA hosted a meeting between Pridnestrovie's acting foreign minister, Vitaly Ignatyev, and the UN special rapporteur on minority issues, Rita Izsák-Ndiaye, the MFA's press service reports.

Welcoming the guest, Vitaliy Ignatyev noted that Pridnestrovie is traditionally open to cooperation with international organisation, including the United Nations. «We pay special attention to the visits by UN special rapporteurs. I think your visit will be efficient and substantive in terms of obtaining information about the situation in the country," said the diplomat.

The minister underscored that Pridnestrovie aims to implement in proper time international norms, including in the sphere of human rights protection,

«The republic has worked out a special formula of the legal implementation of norms and conventions in the sphere of human rights which allows us, considering our partially restricted international sovereignty, to use as norms the provisions stipulated in such documents as the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights, European Convention on Human Rights and international human rights pacts. These and many other international documents are the basis of Pridnestrovie's legal framework," said Vitaliy Ignatyev.

The foreign minister reminded that earlier the UN senior expert on human rights in Pridnestrovie, Thomas Hammarberg, had carried out a comprehensive analysis of the situation in the sphere of human rights protection. «He gave a high assessment to our constitution which secures equal rights and freedoms, regardless of gender, nationality, language and other aspects," said Ignatyev.

Answering the UN special rapporteur's question about the situation in the sphere of human rights of Pridnestrovie's ethnic groups, Vitaliy Ignatyev focused on the peculiarities of establishing the republic when firm foundations were laid for the peaceful coexistence of different nationalities — Russians, Ukrainians, Moldavians, Bulgarians, Jews, Poles and Armenians.

«Our citizens feel comfortable regardless of their nationality and can fully realise their rights at all levels," underscored Vitaliy Ignatyev.

At the end of the meeting Rita Izsák-Ndiaye thanked Pridnestrovian representatives for their readiness for open dialogue. The parties agreed to continue constructive cooperation.
