Tiraspol, 20 February. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. The Russian soldiers are the core of the peacekeeping operation ensuring peace in the Dniester region, said the president following a paramilitary sports performance dedicated to the forthcoming Defender of the Fatherland Day.

«Peace is what Pridnestrovian citizens value most of all. I consider that in this region of Europe the Russian peacekeepers as part of the peacekeeping operation are making a serious contribution in the maintenance of peace and stability,” the president said in an interview with journalists.

Yevgeny Shevchuk underscored that Pridnestrovie’s stance on a format of the peacekeeping mission remains unchanged: «until a final political solution to the conflict is found, there is no point in withdrawing the Russian troops as it will aggravate the situation and may lead to an armed conflict.”

According to the head of state, calls for the withdrawal of the Russian military from Pridnestrovie are voiced by those who «are trying to «defrost' the conflict, engage Nato in the Pridnestrovian settlement”.
