Yevgeny Shevchuk: investment in healthcare and education is investment in human capital

Today, the President has held a meeting of the Council of State

Tiraspol, 13 January. /Novosti Pridnestrovya/. A meeting of the Council of State took place, chaired by President Shevchuk. Council members focused the 2016 draft budget and the country's current financial situation.

According to the presidential press service, the president noted that in 2012−2015 particular attention had been given to education and healthcare.

«In the past four years, in compliance with the Council of State's decision and after setting these spheres as priorities, 150 schools and pre-school institutions have been repaired, and kindergarten queues have been abolished. Nineteen healthcare facilities have been reconstructed and equipped. The new equipment has already helped to save the lives of 96 newborns. In 2015 alone the Prioritet programme encompassed 116 social facilities. A total of $119 million has been allocated from extra-budgetary sources to health care and education spheres, which is 10 times as much as budget allocations," underscored Yevgeny Shevchuk.

The president noted that the biggest contributions have been made by Russia. Thus, within the framework of the Russian-Pridnestrovian project, schools have received over half a million new textbooks, and ANO Eurasian Integration has been building and reconstructing a number of healthcare and education institutions. The president compared the investment in these sectors to the investment in human capital.

Besides, as was noted at the council meeting, the appearance of the central parts of the country's biggest cities — Tiraspol, Bendery, Rybnitsa — has changed in the past years.

Yevgeny Shevchuk also mentioned that the government is implementing a programme to improve public lighting in Pridnestrovie. This programme is aimed at enhancing the quality of lighting in public places and, consequently, the safety of citizens. New energy saving lamps help to reduce, among other things, electric energy costs.

«Despite the socio-economic difficulties we faced in 2015, the country is being made comfortable and developing," said Yevgeny Shevchuk.

The president called on Council of State members to unite efforts to attract extra investment and improve the social infrastructure of Pridnestrovian cities and districts in 2016.
