Konstantin Kosachyov: any attempts by Moldova to exert pressure on Pridnestrovie just delay a conflict settlement

The senator believes that only Kishinev and Tiraspol can finally determine a settlement formula

That is what the chairman of the Federation Council international committee replied to our reporter's question during a meeting with Public Diplomatic Corps graduates.

«To force Pridnestrovians into hanging their heads and silently agreeing to live in Moldova or the united Moldo-Romanian state would be very ingenious, especially after what they have passed through. This will never happen. And any attempts to press Pridnestrovie, in my opinion, just delay the political process. Moreover, attempts to organise the 'reunion' of Moldova and Romania will bury any prospects for political settlement," said Kosachyov.

He noted that Kishinev and Tiraspol would finally determine a form of this settlement. «No one else can determine it — neither Washington, nor Kiev, nor Moscow, nor Brussels, nor Vienna. The task is to do our best to prevent Pridnestrovians from being brought to their knees. I mean the solution of economic and social issues, breakthrough of the blockade, in which now Ukraine is taking active part," he said.

«This can be achieved in a direct dialogue. Russia has always encouraged and will be encouraging, first of all, Kishinev and our other partners in the 5+2 format," underscored the senator.

Besides, he believes that «there is a need for the maximum consolidation of the Pridnestrovian society.»

«I am sure that only powerful and consolidated authorities will work for the benefit of the population," concluded Konstantin Kosachyov.
