Elektromash requests government to impose special import duty on some electrical goods

The plant management is complaining of a considerable decline in sales and a large share of import electrical goods in the domestic market

ZAO Elektromash has requested the government to impose a special customs duty on the following electrical goods: domestic pumps, corn choppers, woodworking machines. In an interview with journalists, Natalya Soldatova, head of the Elektromash economy and finance department, said that the sales of the above-mentioned goods have decreased since 2014 from 10 to 2% of the total sales.

«The demand for [Elektromash] production has been significantly reduced, since there are import analogues in the market," the manager complained.

The deputy minister of economic development, Dmitriy Boltrushko, has confirmed the government had received the Elektromash request. The Economic Development Ministry experts are currently analysing the production of the goods referred to in the request.

«Imposing a special customs duty may influence the price for import goods. We must take a decision which would be optimal for our economy as a whole," underscored Dmitriy Boltrushko.

The rate of a potential special duty is yet to be fixed. According to the deputy minister, this duty will not be restrictive, but levelling.

In its request to the government, the Elektromash management points out «a significant social component.» «Today over 80 employees are engaged in the production. Forty of them work in interplant cooperation. We want to preserve our collective," said Natalya Soldatova.

For reference: There is a state support agreement between Elektromash and Pridnestrovie's government. According to this agreement, the plant, 25% of which is owned by the state, is granted benefits for procuring energy products.
