Vasily Kashirin: Provocations like that in Chisinau airport torpedoing political dialogue between Dniester banks

Defending national interests must be keener and subtler, said the deputy director of the RISI Dniester-Prut centre, Vasily Kashirin, PhD, in an exclusive interview with the journalist of the Novosti Pridnestrovya news agency

The Russian expert noted that the incident which took place in Chisinau airport on 10 November was "a deplorable and culpable event." Vasily Kashirin believes it was a provocation against Pridnestrovian President Yevgeny Shevchuk, designed in advance by certain forces in the Moldovan leadership.

"Moldova's political elites, power structures and special services must not like the Pridnestrovian leaders or help them; it is quite evident and taken for granted. But why stoop to such petty and crude provocations? Defending national interests must be keener and subtler. And possible responses, which may damage other people's interests, should always be kept in mind. Such provocations torpedo the 5+2 Talks and the opportunity for a political dialogue between the Dniester banks," underscored Vasily Kashirin.

The deputy director believes that there is a direct link between the airport incident and Moldova's electoral campaign because "combatants' picketing" took place on the same day as Moldova's Association of the Dniester War Veterans declared its support to one of the biggest parties in Moldova.

The Russian expert observed that today's signing of several agreements on cooperation between dedicated agencies of Russia and Pridnestrovie showed that "Russia's policy for comprehensive interactions and support of Pridnestrovie remains invariable despite any obstacles. Putting up barriers on the way between Russia and Pridnestrovie will provide one more argument for seeking alternative routes. And objectively, it won't be favourable to Moldov

"However, we still hope that more pragmatic political forces will come to power in Moldova, and they will not impede either the political dialogue between Tiraspol and Kishinev or experts studying problems of the Dniester-Prut region," concluded Vasily Kashirin.
