President inspects Safe City system

Yevgeny Shevchuk visited the monitoring center of the Tiraspol Interior Department

According to Alexander Leshchinsky, head of the Tiraspol Interior Department,  today 24 surveillance cameras work in the capital; another three are in test mode.

"When a violation is detected, a system inspector makes a record of it, archives it and submits it to dedicated services for further investigation," Alexander Leshchinsky commented on the system's work.

The president stressed the importance of strengthening the fight against traffic deaths, as well as installing speed detection devices.

"We have accidents caused by exceeding the speed-limit  when people are knocked down on pedestrian crossings right in the centre of the city," noted Yevgeny Shevchuk.

According to him, there were 74,000 traffic infringements last year; 35 persons died in road accidents.

"There is a need for the traffic inspection to be properly equipped to decrease road traffic death rate and road traffic accidents in general <...> Loosing 35 persons in accidents every year is a considerable figure," the head of state pointed out.

The Interior Department's plans also include the expansion of the Safe City system: setting up of the so-called Safety Circle.

"The system of surveillance cameras is being implemented, allowing the city's territory to be monitored, including incoming and outgoing motor transport," the head of the Tiraspol Interior Department underscored.

The law-enforcement agencies have also supported the municipal authorities' initiative to install video surveillance systems in the city's courtyards.

By the end of the year the number of surveillance cameras will have increased to 37 units in Tiraspol and 24 units in Bendery.

For reference: The Safe City system was launched in 2007 following the Russian example. Its operating programme includes three areas: general monitoring of  law and order maintenance in the city limits; detection of traffic infringements; protection of sites with cultural and historic value. The system detects approximately 100 traffic violations per day.

Safe City helped to reveal 5,000 traffic violations in 2013. The total sum of recovered penaltiesfor violations was about 200,000 rubles.
